Post-Game Quotes: Crew - Galaxy

Columbus Crew coach Robert Warzycha

Okay, to be honest with you I enjoyed the game, that was pretty good. I think that was one of the best performances this year by us, playing against a team that is playing well, has a lot of former international players and a good coach. I mean it was not easy. So I think we performed very well, we were very good on both sides of the ball.

(You had to be happy with the final 10-15 minutes, the way you made them chase)

Absolutely, absolutely. There was a lot of composure. There was a lot of movement by the players, and everybody was on the same page. So I was very happy with that.

(That was a page out of Cruz Azul maybe?)

Listen, I told you that the games against Cruz Azul, the games that we played, we learned a lot. When you play against the better teams, obviously it is up to you whether you are going to learn or not. Today, I think that the performance especially in the end showed that the guys have some more trust between them, and also there was a lot of composure, and then they find out that possessing the ball is the best way to kill the game.

(Scrappy game, right? Would you call it scrappy? Bruce was just in here saying it was ugly, it was scrappy; is that just because he lost?)

I don't know, you should ask him. For me, that was a perfect game for us. There was a lot of battle, I don't think there were any cheap fouls, so the guys were not going after each other or grabbing the jersey or elbows, or something like this. The field condition was the worst that it was, it was very slick so sometimes the ball went too far, and that's why the guys were making effect. I don't think it was anything intentional.

(Steven Lenhart seemed to take a beating tonight, can you talk about that?)

He played against a bull defender, against Gonzalez; they're physical guys, and I think he likes that kind of game. I think it was good for him.

(You have to be pleased with the play of some of the reserves; Burns getting his first start in the league, Renteria getting his first start, a lot of players contributing who are not normally associated with the first team)

Yeah, we don't have a reserve team. We have 23 players right now who can step up any time in the field and win any games. So you saw today, would you call, what's his name, Renteria or Kevin Burns' performance that of a reserve? No. They were one of the best on the field. So everybody here on this club is contributing. We have a very deep squad, and I can go with any player and as long as we're going to play as a team we're going to be very successful.

(It also must make it very easy to fill out the team sheet, and hand some minutes with no Rogers tonight, with wins against some of the best teams in the West lately)

Well, we have a very important game coming up against Saprissa on Tuesday, so that was a plan not to use them too much today and obviously with the result and the way that game was going, we rested them for that game. So probably you're going to see them on the field on Tuesday.

(Renteria's work ethic, what has he been bringing to the team?)

Well, I think that's good because the crowds, they can help players, especially if he's a new one, if he's in his first game, they can help him adjust, so that's great that they did that, and then obviously he had that nice shot and that was the second goal. That was a good performance by him. We know what he can do, you saw it, even against Gonzalez, a big guy, he can hold him off and he can spin. He has a good shot, and I'm sure we're going to see more of him.

(Streaks and trends...its 22 straight games unbeaten now at home in league play. The longer you go without losing, does that become a habit? Do you talk about it?)

I'm taking it one game at a time. Whether it is home or away, we're trying to go onto the field and perform and win. Trying to do the best we can. Sometimes outcome is different, you saw that against Cruz Azul. That was a good game by us, but we came up short. But as long as we play hard and try to do our best, I'm fine with that.

Its nice, obviously its something we're going to read a long time from now, okay, we were unbeaten since August 2008, and that's something we're going to be proud of, and we are proud of. One day this streak is going to come to an end, but when, we don't know. With performances like this, probably it is going to take a while.

(You said that you saw this game and Tuesday's game as one 180-minute important game. You've got three of the six points that you'd like to get. If you get six in these two, will you look back and say that these were the most important two games of the season?)

Probably. I mean, you never know what the next game is going to bring. You don't know how the other team is going to do, you don't have any control over that. At this point in time, this game against LA was very, very important for us. And the game against Saprissa is going to be huge. So, at this point in time, yes, these two games. If for some reason we're not going to get the result on Tuesday then obviously the game against Puerto Rico is going to be a huge one. So like I said, we don't know what the other team is going to do. Hopefully we're going to get the result on Tuesday and sleep well.

(Did you pull Lenhart off at the end so he could hear the cheers?)

I think he was tired, also. He had a good game, so we're trying to put somebody else on the field to buy some time.

Los Angeles Galaxy coach Bruce Arena

We were just second all night. The game had no rhythm, a lot of fouls, a lot of yellow cards, a sloppy game. I think that Columbus for 90 minutes was first to most of the plays all night. Scrappy game, and they basically won most of the matchups all over the field. Give them credit, their effort was very good.

(Is that what its going to take for a team to beat the Crew here, a scrappy, physical kind of game?)

That's what this was tonight. Obviously the field conditions being slick and all that, has something to do with it. We didn't have any quality tonight, anywhere. Certainly we weren't going to beat them tonight. We were poor tonight.

(What disappointed you the most about your game?)

What disappointed me the most, even though the soccer wasn't good, the competing and the mentality wasn't what it needed to be to position ourselves to win or get a point tonight. The goal we gave up, what was it, in the 32nd minute or something like that, that was a big part of the game. We need to be in even at halftime to position ourselves to try and get a result.

We weren't good tonight, that's all I can say.

(Is there a concern, two weeks ago you were down, you won last week, coming down to the end of the season...)

We've lost the fewest games in the league this year, its not like we're going to have a crisis here. But it was not a good effort tonight. It wasn't good.

It was what it was.
