CREW DROWNS UNITED 1-0

Matt Bernhardt
April 28, 2007

Ezra Hendrickson scored the game's only goal in the 28th minute, while Andy Gruenebaum posted 5 saves to defeat visiting DC United tonight. It was the Crew's first win of the season, and United's third consecutive defeat.

Columbus, now with a record of 1-0-3 on the season, improves to 6 points and sits in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. DC, meanwhile, falls to 0-3 and is tied for last in the league with expansion club Toronto FC.

Hendrickson, the third different Crew player to score this season, put back his own rebound after receiving a cross from Ricardo Virtuoso just before the half hour mark. Several Crew players had chances to extend the lead, including a gilt-edged opportunity for sub Stefani Miglioranzi in the 70th minute, but he sailed his shot over the crossbar from the top of the penalty area. Jason Garey also just missed the left post in the 83rd minute, moments after failing to reach a cross at the back post.

The game was interrupted for a lightning delay for about 20 minutes in the 84th minute as fans scurried for the exits - or at least a dry patch of stadium. After the rains cleared, the teams resumed play for the last 6 minutes of regulation time - although neither team had a significant opportunity to change the scoreline.

Columbus next travels to Kansas City for a 1:00 PM match next Saturday, while DC United will try, again, to register their first win of the season this Thursday as they play host to the New England Revolution.
